Laptop Liquid Damage: What to Do in the First 24 Hours

Spilled water or coffee on your laptop? Acting fast can limit the damage. Here’s what to do in the first 24 hours and when to bring it in for repair.

Step 1: Power Off Immediately

Turn the laptop off right away—don’t use Sleep. If it’s plugged in, unplug it and remove the battery if it’s removable. The goal is to stop current flowing through wet circuits and reduce the risk of short circuits.

Step 2: Drain and Dry (Carefully)

Tip the laptop to let liquid drain out (keyboard down, screen open). Wipe exterior surfaces with a soft, lint-free cloth. Don’t use a hairdryer or heat—it can warp parts. Let the machine air-dry in a well-ventilated area for at least 24–48 hours before trying to power it on.

Step 3: When to Bring It In for Repair

Even if the laptop seems to work after drying, corrosion can develop over time. For the best chance of a full recovery, bring it to a repair shop as soon as possible. Technicians can open the device, clean affected areas, and assess damage to the motherboard and other components.
